Unity Baptist Tabernacle was established in May 1932 as The People's Gospel Mission by the late Reverend Dr. E.W. Bowen. Just one year later, the church adopted the name Unity Baptist Tabernacle as it became deeply engaged in a vibrant campaign for Christ. The congregation held its first worship services at 44 South 4th Avenue in Mount Vernon, New York.

As the number of parishioners seeking salvation grew, Unity was compelled to relocate its place of worship three times between 1932 and 1947 to accommodate the expanding community.

In May 1968, as Unity Baptist Tabernacle celebrated its 36th year of Christian service, the church proudly marched through the streets of Mount Vernon to its new and current home at 101 South Second Avenue, Mount Vernon, New York. Situated atop the hill on Second Street, Unity Baptist Tabernacle has become known throughout the city as "the church where God is Love."
